Designer Sunglasses Replace Handbags as The Luxury Item To Have

Going into any designer store, you will notice a crowd of women in front of the mirror. They are not looking at their Louis Vuitton bags that brace their arms. No, they are instead busy trying on and adjusting the frames to a pair of Dolce and Gabana sunglasses. A New York Times article reported recently that there has been a growing trend for designer sunglasses and they have even managed to supercede luxury handbags as the new "it" item.

Where the French and Italian leather bags once topped the wish lists of all young and old women everywhere, designer sunglasses have come to replace them. Why such a sudden shift, you wonder? The reason alot of people initially bought the designer handbags was not out of necessity but out of indulgence. Displaying the desirable labels made women feel as if they were the envy of all others and therefore warranted more attention. This may or may not have been the reality but the fact that it caused this effect is the crux of the matter. Eventually,  women grew tired of the "It" bag. They filled their closets with Coach and LV logo until it could store no more. Naturally, as the turn of the fashion tide inevitably arrives, people have to shed their former obsessions and trade it in for a new one. That's where designer sunglasses come into the picture.

Perhaps a more important factor affecting the drift away from other designer goods is the poor economy. Now faced with varying levels of financial woes, this same group of people are looking for a new more affordable symbol of luxury. Coveting designer sunglasses versus handbags is not just a matter of aesthetics, it's about about simple math. Designer sunglasses--although expensive--are relatively accessible to shoppers used to paying in the thousands for dresses or bags. According to the New York Times article, they are "still a novel way to acquire the cachet of a designer brand." It's either sacrificing $900 dollars for a Chanel handbag or $350 for a pair of Chanel sunglasses. In both cases, you can claim the allure of the label but in the latter situation, you would save nearly $600. The choice is simple.
